Located about one station from Nagoya Station, Shikemichi is a merchant area that was created in the early Edo period when merchants migrated from Kiyosu during construction of Nagoya Castle. Many traditional wooden townhouses were destroyed in the great fire of 1700. The width of the road was expanded to 4 ken (about 7 m) for fire prevention purposes, so the area became known as the Shikemichi.

The old house has a renovated hideaway restaurant and a stylish cafe. We highly recommend stopping by for lunch or tea.
When you enter the alley, you can see the Komorijizoson which was erected in 1700 and the Yanegamisama that houses a small shrine on the roof of a private house. The Yanegamisama is unique to Nagoya, and began with a small shrine placed on the roof with prayers to protect the family from plagues and fires.

A charming shopping street that combines a good old downtown atmosphere with a new culture near Shikemichi and Nagoya Station. A traditional festival has been held at the Endoji Tanabata Festival since around 1956, and the Endoji Shopping Street Saturday Market, which is held on the first Saturday of each month, is always a popular place to visit with even more shops than usual. We invite you to visit an old store that still offer a nostalgic feel, or to go into a new store that has a lot of personality.
Nagoya Yuzen began when Kyoto introduced the technique of Yuzen to Nagoya during the era when Owari culture was flourishing magnificently.
Nagoya Yuzen, which has lasted for more than 300 years, was loved in the era of simplicity and frugality. It has been loved for its calm and unique “shibusa” (austere elegance) of monochromatic shading and limited number of colors, and has been passed down to the present day with the designation of being a traditional national craft in 1983.
Horibe is a yuzen studio that specializes in manufacturing kimono for yuzen dyeing in Nagoya. The dyeing technique Jukouzome, which replicates the shape of the natural plants themselves, is an original technique by Mr. Horibe of Yuzen Kobo Horibe.

You can easily experience hand-drawn yuzen in the Yuzen Kobo Horibe workshop. (advance reservation required)
It is a valuable experience where you can see the craftsmanship of Michihisa Horibe, a Yuzen artist, up close because he wants people to know about Yuzen and to learn to enjoy the culture of kimono. Experience hand-drawn Yuzen for 1 hour. Cost: ¥2,000
